Classes are available and a library assistant is on hand to help guests figure out how to use everything. Like the creativity rooms, the onsite digital studio offers classes and provides access to videography and photography equipment. A brief orientation ensures that users feel safe and comfortable working with the expensive cameras and lights. Two editing labs with the full suite of Adobe software add to the digital creative possibilities. The children’s library houses books, magazines and comfy spaces to read. Three sets of computers provide software for learning, games and other age-appropriate activities. A large room accommodates story time and movie time for various age groups (infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children). The teen library offers space for kids between grades 6 and 12 to hang out — and while adults can browse, they can’t stick around in the study and gaming rooms. A seating area allows teens to read in quiet comfort. A reading garden behind the library provides space to read outside, with Wi-Fi access and charging station posts scattered throughout. Access to the garden is through the teen library and the adult quiet room. One of the quietest spaces in the library, the quiet room has upholstered rockers for seriously comfortable reading. Other amenities available at the Wando Mount Pleasant Library include a learning lab, 20 public computers, chrome books that can be rented inside the library and Eschenbach magnifiers to assist readers with a variety of vision challenges. Finally, an area at the front of the library offers vending machines and tables for snacking. MOUNT PLEASANT REGIONAL LIBRARY The 14,000-square-foot Mount Pleasant Regional Library, located at 1133 Mathis Ferry Road, was built in 1992 after a 1986 referendum which recognized the need to expand the CCPL service area. Regular programming offerings include a technology series that helps patrons understand the devices we depend on every day. A great discussions series provides a briefing book for conversations in two separate foreign policy discussion groups, and parents can enjoy weekly story times with babies, toddlers and preschoolers. SULLIVAN’S ISLAND LIBRARY On Sullivan’s Island there’s the Edgar Allen Poe/ Sullivan’s Island Library, located at 1921 Ion Ave. In 1977, the Sullivan’s Island branch of the CCPL moved from Sullivan’s Island Elementary into the newly renovated Battery Gadsden, a Spanish-American War four-gun battery. Poe’s connection to Sullivan’s Island stems from his stint in the Army in the late 1820s, and the fact that he located his story “The Gold Bug” on the island. Among the regularly offered programs are a beach lovers book club, a memoir writing circle and age-appropriate story times. VILLAGE LIBRARY The Village Library, the oldest of the four East Cooper libraries, is located at 430 Whilden Street in the Old Village. Originally occupying a single room, this branch opened in 1931and was enlarged in 1948. A seasonally relevant book display offers a selection of interesting reading choices, and kids can enjoy craft and story time. THE CHARLIE CART PROJECT One of the coolest CCPL programming initiatives happens at both Wando Mount Pleasant and Mount Pleasant Regional libraries. In coordination with the Lowcountry Food Bank, CCPL offers programming through The Charlie Cart Project. A national initiative based in Berkeley, California, the project helps communities understand the link between food, climate and the economy. A “hands-on food education and nutrition program,” this curriculum offers a mobile kitchen with classes for kids and adults. If you’re looking for things to do — for yourself, your children, your teens — the four libraries East of the Cooper are great places to start.
