According to a December 2019 Gallup Poll, American adults visited the library in 2019 twice as often as they went to either the movies or to live sporting events. And if you’re a patron of any of our local public library branches, you probably have a pretty good idea why libraries are so popular. In Charleston County, the public library system has a huge impact on education and community engagement. Last year 3.3 million items were checked out of the 19 branches, mobile library and digital resources that make up the CCPL system. During that time, approximately 210,000 people attended the 6,000 free classes and programs offered by our libraries. In the East Cooper area alone, CCPL provides four library branches that offer exciting programming, books, movies and public computer access. All four branches also offer a Mobile Printing Service, which allows you to print directly from your phone or other internet connected device. With varying sizes and offerings, the four libraries address a variety of community needs. WANDO MOUNT PLEASANT LIBRARY The newest branch is also the largest library East of the Cooper at 40,000 square feet. The Wando Mount Pleasant Library, located at 1400 Carolina Park Blvd., is beautifully designed, spacious and welcoming. With plenty of rooms for meetings, classes, study time, video gaming and even a fully operational photography and videography studio, there isn’t much you can’t learn and do in this facility. This branch is divided into three major sections: adult, teen and children. These areas provide access to fiction, nonfiction, magazines and computer terminals. Both the teen and adult sections have study rooms that easily accommodate four people but can hold up to six. Study rooms are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and small meeting rooms, which can comfortably accommodate 20 people, can be reserved through an online reservation system at ccpl.org . The large community room comfortably seats 120. This space can also be divided with a soundproof wall allowing two events at the same time, each accommodating about 60. Two creativity studios offer different types of learning opportunities. Classroom 1 is set up with tables, chairs and a whiteboard for instruction. Classroom 2 is a hands- on creativity workshop that provides access to sewing and BY HOLLY VORIES Borrowing Books East of the Cooper
