It’s not a big deal though because there is plenty of time to try your hand at all of them — and then maybe pick a favorite or two to return to again and again. In fact, there are even dual and triple golf membership options available for Dunes West, Snee Farm and RiverTowne. Charleston National Golf Club Charleston National Golf Club features a challenging 18-hole layout by renowned golf course architect Rees Jones. It combines the quality and amenities of a private club with the accessibility and reasonable greens fees of a public course. Charleston National was conceived as an exclusive private club along the same lines of Augusta National, home of the Masters Tournament. But nature, in the form of Hurricane Hugo, intervened right after the grand opening in 1989. Thousands of old trees were lost, and the course closed for more than a year for redesign and renovation. Fortunately for local and visiting golfers, this superb course reopened as a semiprivate club, providing the public with the opportunity to play what its original architect called “one of the elite venues in golf ” at a moderate price. Charleston National is consistently ranked by major golf publications as the number one non-resort course in the Charleston area. The club offers all the services of a private facility, from clubhouse to pro shop, restaurant and bar. DunesWest Golf & River Club At Dunes West Golf & River Club, a long winding road passing tall live oaks draped with Spanish moss eventually leads you to a stately clubhouse. The drive creates a sublime mood for a fun day of golf. Dunes West combines a masterful Arthur Hills designed course, a charming clubhouse overlooking Wagner Creek and some of the area’s most spectacular scenery into a truly world-class and one-of-a-kind experience. Nationally acclaimed by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest as a “Top 10 Resort Course,” Dunes West’s championship golf course takes full advantage of its spectacular Lowcountry setting. The par 72 course plays 6,871 yards, beckoning players of all handicaps, and combines with Dunes West’s first-class club facilities. The opening holes have generous landing areas and beautiful green settings complete with the undulation and bunkering that are Arthur Hills signature. Number four, a 489-yard par 5, is a well-thought-out design. A big tee shot leaves you with an opportunity to go for the green in two, which demands a carry across a pond that runs down the left side of the fairway to the green. The back nine features beautiful marsh and water views culminating in the 18th hole’s challenging finish on a dual green split by the marshes of Wagner Creek. RiverTowne Country Club RiverTowne Country Club is Arnold Palmer’s first signature course in the Charleston area. Situated among scenic marshlands and majestic live oaks with 13 holes playing along the Wando River and Horlbeck Creek, this 18-hole course features exceptional year-round playing conditions with five sets of tees from 5,100 yards to 7,200 yards. RiverTowne is a semi-private club. The course is open for public play, but they offer traditional memberships and premium value bundled memberships. RiverTowne is also affiliated with the national ClubCorp network, offering access to a network of over 200 private golf and country clubs. This is a true shot-maker’s course; boasting tree-lined fairways, generous landing areas to setup approach shots and multi-tiered greens guarded by bunkers and water. The fairways are ample, and the greens roll true. They are kept at a medium speed, befitting a resort course yet approachable enough for public play. Amenities include a driving range, practice area and putting green, plantation-style clubhouse, pro shop and access to PGA teaching professionals. The course has received several industry awards including: • A 4.5 Star Rating in Golf Digest ’s “Places to Play” Tee Time Four Excellent Golf Clubs
